Beautiful disaster

Quick trip to southern California. First stop, Salvation Mountain.

Then on to Bombay Beach and the Salton Sea. The lake was created in the early 1900’s. It was a popular recreation spot, and the town of Bombay Beach was at its height in the 1950’s, with some lakeside resorts.

This is Bombay Beach today.

Since there is no outflow for the lake, the salinity and pollution built up. The fish and birds are dying by the thousands. Botulism is popular way to go.

Near the water, the beach is made of fish bones.

But when the sun is setting, it’s the most beautiful environmental disaster you’ll ever see.

All the photographers agree.
